How much wood?

29 Jul

Good evening! Today’s finds showcase some good picks using wood as the main material. Mmmm I can smell the sweet sawdust.

Custom Cajon Box Drum Beat Box by DeadTreeDesign

I just love these. A friend of mine has one and all the sets he does with Adam, he does on his cajon. They aren’t widely used here, so he definitely gets a lot of ‘wow’ and ‘what is that thing?’

I’m so excited to have found this on Etsy because they really are perfect for any drummer who simply can’t lug their whole kit with them. A cajon has all sorts of sounds in it and what’s really awesome is that it’s simply the way the wood hits wood or how dense the area you’re banging on it. I don’t know much about drumming (despite having about one hundred drummers in my life) but I do know t

hat this is a must-have for anyone who likes to just whip it out (not like that) and play.

Way to kick off the finds, DeadTreeDesign!

Next, something I never imagined to exist. Ever.

GRANNY KNOT wood veneer pendant light by transfigure

Knotted wood. I know that in retrospect, this being surprising to me probably makes it seem like I’ve been living under a rock, but it is true. I was surprised.

A really great piece of art, to me, is not something that you look at and say: “Oh my gosh that is an exact replica of George Washington!” That, my friend, is simply skill. A great piece has many components, and one of them is the element of surprise.

Structurally this piece is predictable, but that is hardly an issue when the very spirit of the piece is so surprising. When I think of wood, I think of something solid, strong, and dependable (there’s a reason people are impressed with solid oak furniture). Seeing wood knotted, as if a piece of ribbon, is almost shocking. It’s wood. It’s not supposed to bend like that.

I think that what transfigure is doing is awesome and has fed my lighting craving for the night. Thank you!

Harry Potter Inspired - Wood Wand - Cocobolo & Katalox by CustomWoodChuck

So I finally accepted the fact that I am almost twenty-two years old and my Hogwarts letter isn’t coming. (It only took over ten years to be okay with it) Thanks to CustomWoodChuck though, I can at least do some killer cosplay with their wands of awesome!

In all seriousness (though I feel like being serious is just such a downer in blogland) there is a wood turner in my village and their work (I really don’t know if they are a he or a she. I never see them) is incredible. Just their front porch alone has me drooling.

So coming across a find with woodturning and Harry Potter? This is why I started this blog.

While I Should Have Been Sleeping

20 Jul

Good morning all! Here is where I would write a little bit about the finds as a whole, but I chose instead to write up this post as I discover the day’s finds, so even I don’t know what to expect!

Octopus Lamp Symetrical Version by GetBentMetal

Holy tentacles! If this isn’t one of the most enticing lamps I’ve ever seen I don’t know what is. I love what GetBentMetal has done here for many reasons, as is true with most things.

In college, I had a friend who was, (well still is) a painter. His main focus was tentacles and his work was so beautiful that my love for octopoti (as we so affectionately call them) emerged. At the same time I declared myself to be a sculpture major with an absolute fascination for metalworking. Sadly, (or not really, since I did it of my own accord) I left college early and never learned the skill.

I also love light fixtures.

Another reason I love this piece so much is that it is so refreshing. Octopoti, like foxes, owls, and mustaches, are so hot right now (Like Hansel) so it’s difficult to find a piece that isn’t that pendant or created simply because, well, it’s trending. People want it.

This piece has its own place and it isn’t in the trends. I have to thank GetBentMetal for that (thank you) and continue to applaud this piece.

Next is something brought to us by Embelishedbytiffany:

25 Lingerie Corset Invitations by Embelishedbytiffany

You’ll probably get a feel for this down the line, but I’m a sucker for most things historical, romantic, and pertaining to the historical romance novels that I can’t get enough of. These invitations wrap so many different aspects of being a Lady into something that is so ordinary.

Now I can see something cool, and say, “Oh, that’s really cool” but that’s not the point of this blog. There are a lot of things that are ‘cool’ and then we move on.

What I find to be really fabulous about these pieces are that first off, they are shaped like corsets. Corsets are another thing that are really in right now, but not as undergarments. Looking at these invites, I immediately feel some earl’s virgin daughter flushing with embarrassment as a rogue marquis tugs gently at the ribbons of her—

Ahem.

Well, you know. They are delicate, they are classy, yet they still feel like if you unlace and open them you might get into some sort of trouble. That is excellent.

Lastly, but certainly not least(ly), some jewelry. I’m going to be honest. I’m not a big fan of most handmade jewelry (here comes the angry mob of Etsy jewelers) so you won’t see much of it here. It’s especially difficult to find pieces that impress me on Etsy because the jewelry department is the most saturated department and unless you are casting, carving, or sculpting everything yourself, it’s difficult to stand out even to jewelry shoppers, nevermind someone like me, who is very critical of it. (working for a fine jewelry company coupled with art school will do that to a person)

However, there are pieces and shops that stand out. Take LostApostle, for example (Another ETK member!)

Anatomical Heart Pendant Necklace by LostApostle

Now before you all jump on me for featuring a heart, (what am I, a scene queen?!) LOOK AT IT. That isn’t just a heart pendant. Nay, that is a bronzed organ. Anatomically correct, this wasn’t bought wholesale from China and tossed onto a chain.

And that’s why I love this, and all of LostApostle’s work. While I don’t have any crazy deep emotional reason (sorry buddy) to love it, all I can say is how much I appreciate the work, passion and detail that goes into the creation of something this intricate and on such a small scale!

Awesome. Just, awesome.
