Organizing Small Spaces: The Sewing Room

11 Aug

Good Evening! I apologize for the lack of finds last night. I got in in my head to make a skirt and so chained myself to my sewing machine from 9pm-4:30am, neglecting the finds completely. :(

Today’s finds are the leftover sewing energy from last night! It is also the first post in my Organizing Small Spaces series: THE SEWING ROOM. Enjoy!

Little houses--- Double wall pocket organizer by PetiteMaison

First we have something that I desperately need. A hanging wall organizer. I’ve settled to keep my finances in order in a binder and that’s all well and good, but I need a space to keep my receipts for the month all nice and tidy since my desk is severely lacking in any neatness and/or tidiness and I don’t have much space to put anything!

PetiteMaison‘s adorable solution to that problem is exactly what I have been looking for. It’s small enough where I wouldn’t be tempted to fill it up with nonsense or lose track of the receipts I add, no matter how small they may be. It’s also nice and flat, unlike the traditional mail organizers, and with the size of my studio, I want as few things of bulk as possible!

On the wall chinese design spool/bobbin/thread rack by Jordenski

Jordenski  has another solution to one of my problems. Where to put my threads and bobbins? Right now they are overflowing in a few sections of snapware that spill onto the floor every time I knock it over (about twice a day) or pick it up, having forgotten to close it properly. I should be on one of those infomercials about terrible organization. I’m not acting.

Another issue I have with bins of thread is that I go for the closest match in color. Since they are in layers of snapware, I can’t see what I have right in front of me. With this wall rack, everything is right there for me to see, tucked away neatly on the wall, and I can arrange them in ROYGBIV order.

Sewing Mat Organizer Thread Catcher and Pin Cushion...PDF Tutorial Ebook by aSundayGirl

While this might not be something ‘small space’ specific, this is definitely handy to have. I personally sew on a folding TV dinner tray table and my scissors/trimmers/measuring tape/chalk/stray threads always end up… on the chair behind me. Or on the floor. Or under my feet. Or behind the sewing machine. I’m always twisting and turning, “Where the heck are my scissors? I just had them!”

Good for all of you like me, aSundayGirl offers not the item itself, but the PDF Tutorial, which is great because chances are, if you need a caddy like this, you’re an avid sewer, so of course you would want to make it yourself! Also if  you’re like me, you’d want to theme it yourself too.

Maybe use up some of those scraps piling up like a beast in the corner over there..

Some great ideas, love the tread organiser – I definitely need that!

Love the caddy that goes under/in front of the sewing machine. My imagination is running in high gear, adapting this for my sewing room. I have my machines on tables, but so help me, there is never enough room for the “stuff” that goes with the craft!

I do wear my thread snips on a ribbon, around my neck, keeping those close at hand. But, the rest of the notions are never, never where I want them to be!

    Thanks for sharing the idea….
